Google Search: broadband power line

I spend a good part of this morning reviewing and update all my systems apps.

I've really just doing normal maintenance type stuff like updates, versioning checking, etc.

This also included a review of my installed applications and man oh man do I install a lot apps for testing. I removed over 12 apps from my system this morning. The one that struck me as kind of funny was that I removed the latest version of Symantec PC Anywhere. It's amazing I got the latest version of PC Anywhere last year and I've only used it twice. I can remember back when PC Anywhere was the "dog's bollocks"! No I'm either using RDP protocol stuff like Microsoft's Remote Desktop or that Stalwart of remote control VNC. PC Anywhere was great and he had his time in the spotlight. Now it's all about ubiquitous broadband and cheap remote control over IP for little or no cost.

Speaking about ubiquitous broadband a buddy at work was asking me about BPL or Broadband over Power lines the other day and so I did a little more research on this since I hadn't really looked into it since last year. Click here for a link to a Google BPL search.

During the update and review process I also went about cleaning up my Firefox extensions and plug-ins. I removed crap that I rarely used anymore. Now I've converted about 80% of my web browsing time over to Firefox since I started using it. Now I have to say that Firefox is definitely faster than IE but that's probably only because it's leaner and has less code bloat in it. If I continue to plug in cool shit to Firefox then I probably start to erode the productivity gains of using Firefox over IE. So 'nuff said now I want to list for you the Firefox extensions that I couldn't stand to get rid off:

Switchproxy
View in IE
BlogThis

These guys are indispensable.

Switchproxy is for those times you doing things of dubious value and want to reduce your financial liability for violating state and federal law (*ahem*)

View in IE is for those times you must absolutely use IE since the coders of the site code for the "huddled masses" instead of the "righteous and true". My company codes for the huddled masses btw.

BlogThis is for blogging links directly from within Firefox kind of like the BloggerAPI for IE which is better and more user friendly but I'm a geek and I'm going to do this the hard way of course!

I've also spent some time today reviewing Purchase Order software for our Mailroom. They are still doing P.O.'s with the old fashioned Triplicate Carbon Forms. This is so 18th century! It's amazing how many little companies out there are trying to fill this niche. It's even more amazing how many try so hard to hide the cost of their software. I hate, hate, hate, hate companies that force you to email them or call them for pricing. It's ridiculous and there ought to be a law against it. I can't imagine a company selling software at a reasonable price and refusing to list it on their website. So I can imaging that any piece of software that that you have to call or email a salesperson for pricing has got to cost at least in excess of a grand.

If we finish the review process and this becomes a project proposal I'll list some of the candidates.

Have a great weekend I'm going to log onto my VPN at work and get my email caught up now.
