Typical Work Day

I just got home from work. It's 15 past midnight and I think that there is no such thing as a typical day. I had this weird impression of what life would by like as a SYSAD and boy was I wrong.

Dont' misunderstand me. I really, really like my job. I just had this weird idea that it didn't require so much maintainence. This job never stops. I've owned and maintained/managed my own computer for years and I just assumed that when you were responsible for a bunch of company machines life would be easier but instead I think it's exponentially harder.

It takes so much freaking time just to make sure shit keeps working. It's freaking amazing. I can't even imaging what life is like in a Data Center or at an ISP. It must be a total freaking nightmare.

[I'm not talking about my X in this post] She's gone and I have zero control over that so I have to move on. (Prozac FTW!)

I want to say it again. I really like my job. I wish that I could change certain things that might make life easier but I'm not sure what I'd change.

But I'll try anyway:

  1. Don't let anyone purchase anything without your local sysad vetting how it will perform.
  2. Give us time to test out shit before we go live in production with it.
  3. Don't focus so much on downtime let's talk about how fast we can bring it back instead.
  4. There is nothing wrong with Windows stuff.
  5. Open source isn't always free.
  6. If you are going to "go deep" with linux then bring in a team to backup your quarterback.
  7. VOIP should be changed to OMFG-VOIP.
  8. Really, do you NEED to have admin rights that bad.
  9. Nothing is simple about file sharing.
  10. Seriously, I need to have a ticket before I can help you.

Enough of that.

I'm tired, and I have to be at work tomorrow.

[Damn I was pretty angry in that last post wasn't I]
