Hired Help the "Clueless Local Tech"
I hate retarded people.
Don't get me wrong I'm on not going on about physically or mentally challenged people. Hell, I'm not even talking about people who drool incessantly or have bad breath and limp. I'm talking about con-artists, shills, clueless, small minded people who pass themselves off as competent hired help.
Local Technicians.
Now I have met or talked to plenty of highly skilled, and amazing people who work on computers and build networks. Regrettably these people are few and far between and probably spend most of their time watching Star Trek.
Every day I am forced to speak with some ponzi scam artist billing one of our clients 95 bucks an hour simply because some idiot employee installed Kazaa or some other piece of high quality software and now wants to know why my grandmothers fake teeth move faster then his top of the line Dell Workstation.
When we as phone tech's get into a situation like this we sometimes recommend to our clientele that they pursue a local technician since the problem is more than likely (definitely) beyond their skill level to resolve in a timely fashion. The bad news is that their is a serious lack of quality local technicians. The majority of the people I speak to are really just system builders with time on their hands. I typically end up spending the better part of an hour or two hand holding the guy's through the simplest procedures. I have taken to calling this practice repair by proxy.
Today for example I had to walk a technician step by step on how to map a freaking network drive from machine A to machine B. You've got to be kidding me! This same guy then asked me to show him how to copy one users settings (favorites, desktop shortcuts, cookies, etc.) from one logon to another.
It's this kind of stuff that makes me want to just quit my job, get a yellow page add, and start making a killing. Instead I quietly go into work and hope that no one sees me and just make one phone call after another until it's time for me to go home.
Maybe my expectations are too high but if you're billing a client for his time shouldn't you at least be able to do the simple stuff?
I don't know maybe one day a computer will be made that can interrogate itself and fix these kinds of issues or develop some kind of memory but in the meantime I'll keep telling clients, to keep hiring idiots so that I can at least have some kind of job security in knowing that at least their is someone out there dumber than me. I guess my dad had it right when he said "Son, there is always going to be somewhere out there smarter, better looking, thinner, and richer than you. Just make sure that someone else thinks your that person."
